Vendor Spotlight – Whisk and the Whimsy
My name is Kelley Barnes and I am the proud owner of Whisk and the Whimsy. I’m a native Nashvillian and currently living in Murfreesboro with my husband and four children. I began making custom cakes, cupcakes and cookies after my time in the United States Navy. I had my first child and quickly realized this was something I can do from home while caring for my babies. After a few years, friends and acquaintances took notice of my work and Whisk and the Whimsy was created.
Now my children are young adults and I have years of experience in baking custom designed cakes and many other artistic talents that I’ve learned along the way. I truly love to watch the faces of my clients when they receive their custom cake orders. Whether it’s sculpted, airbrushed or simply plain and delectable it’s such a joy to bring excitement and happiness to others. There are many events that need an eye catching cake and I love being able to provide the centerpiece that not only looks beautiful but tastes amazing.
There are so many talented bakers in the area, I don’t want to just say I’m better than this one or that one. My clients come to me with their ideas and trust in me to run with it and design something beautiful for them, based off of their theme. Everything I do is from scratch and I enjoy creating new flavors. Most of my recipes can be converted to accommodate food sensitivities like gluten, sugar, dairy, etc..
What do you enjoy the most about being a baker?
I truly love watching the joy in a persons face when they receive their cake or when someone tastes one of the specialty cupcake flavors on our food truck. It’s just simply fun to share in the excitement.
Can you share any success stories or memorable moments from your business?
My biggest event this far:
I was selected to participate in the inaugural Grand Prix event in Nashville. My small team of family and friends helped me to pull off what seemed impossible and we baked over 7000 cupcakes in a few days time. It was so insane and exciting all at the same time.
Most memorable:
I’ve seen many happy tears with wedding and special event cakes. There have been so many sweet moments with customers over the years. The local celebrity clients have been exciting to work with too. However, If I have to pick one most memorable moment it would have to be receiving my Quilt of Valor during a special Woman Warrior event last year. It was presented to me for my Military service and Community service with the bakery business, donating my time, money and lots and lots of sweets around Rutherford county.
What advice would you give to someone planning an event and would need you as a service?
Plenty of notice! To save a specific desired date please plan ahead! I absolutely hate to turn people away but it does happen. I always suggest booking months in advance when possible.
How do you stay up-to-date with the latest trends and innovations in your industry?
My customers typically will bring an idea to me to run with. However, I do love Pinterest and watching the YouTube tutorials and I also follow some pretty amazing cake artists.
